Well, after months of off and on effort working on this demo, I've finally gotten it ready to release. Finally, I've got a demo of my game that I can actually say reflects the kind of game that I want Jen's Quest to be.
Jen's Quest is intended for mature audiences. It contains or may contain in the future: language, violence, nudity, and sexual situations. Exposure to Jen's Quest may be harmful to naivete and child-like ignorance...I mean, innocence. If you're one of those people who think that the best way to teach a young human being to deal with the world is to make sure that they are not exposed to the world, then you will probably not want your children playing Jen's Quest.
The AGI interpreter version 2.917 should have been packaged with this demo. That may be all you need to run the game. Run the program sierra.com, and Jen's Quest should run. If this does not work for you or if the interpreter is not included in the package, then you may download the interpreter or a Windows version of the interpreter called NAGI at www.agidev.com.
Jen's Quest is an adventure game in the style of games such as Police Quest, Space Quest, King's Quest, and Leisure Suit Larry. You move Jennifer with either the arrow keys or the numeric keypad (Num Lock must be turned off). You tell her what to do (although you'll find that you're actually just suggesting what she should do) by typing in commands such as "look at table". If there is a table in the room, then you should then be given a description of the table.
When interacting with other characters in the game, you may carry out conversations with them. For example, in the first room in the game, you might "ask kristen about her computer." Kristen will then respond to you. Actually, Kristen is busy at the moment, so she doesn't have much time for chatting, but other characters in the game may provide you with very useful information when you ask them about things. Carrying out conversations with characters is vital to understanding the story of Jen's Quest. The more you talk with other characters, the better you will understand the story.
Do not be fooled by the mere 3 maximum points that you may obtain in this demo. Points are not awarded for every little thing you do. A great deal of conversation has been implemented in this demo, and Jennifer can look at practically everything. If there's something you'd like to see Jennifer be able to look at that she can't look at in this demo, then feel free to send me a copy of the logfile that appears in your directory. The logfile will keep a record of all the input you've typed that Jen's Quest was unable to process. Unless you tell me what you'd like to see handled, though, I have no way of knowing what's in your logfile.
If you have comments, suggestions, questions, or logfile that you'd like to send to me, you may do so at weremoose@yahoo.com, or you may visit the AGI messageboard at agiboard.cjb.net and leave a message for me. I've put a lot of work into this demo. I'd love to have some feedback (even if you've got a criticism) about it. That's what makes the whole thing worthwhile.
You should not contact Sierra with any questions or comments about Jen's Quest. Sierra did not make this game, and they will not provide any technical support or any other kind of support for it.
This demo is free of charge, and you may distribute it if you wish, with the following restrictions. You may not modify the game itself in any way whatsoever. I would respect your authorship of any game you created, so I don't think it's a lot to ask that you do the same for me. You may remove the interpreter files from the demo package if you do not want to distribute the AGI interpreter, but you may not remove any of the game's data files. If you remove the interpreter files, you should provide those who download the demo a way to get the interpreter files so that they can play it. If you make modifications to the demo package, include an addendum to this readme file with your name, URL, and e-mail detailing the changes that you have made.
This program is a game and nothing else. To the best of my knowledge, there is nothing in the demo package that will cause any damage to your computer. However, I will not be held responsible if any damage does happen to your computer, whether as a direct or indirect result of using this program. If you do not agree with that condition, then don't use the program on your computer.
Jen's Quest was neither authored by nor endorsed by Sierra. Sierra will not provide any technical support or other forms of support for Jen's Quest. Do not contact Sierra with questions or comments about Jen's Quest. Instead, contact me at the locations listed above.
