Howdy all.
My name is Paul Reynolds. I am an Agronomist/Soil Scientist working for
the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission (TNRCC). My
primary functions here within the agency is to evaluate wastewater,
manure and sludge (biosolids) beneficial use sites from various waste
producing facilities in the municipal, industrial and agricultural related
industries.
I am part of a 3 man team that evaluates these sites for potential impacts
to surface and ground waters in the immediate area. I evaluate all
agronomic aspects pertaining to soils and crops. The other two
members of our team evaluate the geological aspects of these sites.
In the recent past, I evaluated all sites applying for a state water quality
permit to land apply the afore mentioned wastes. However, due to an
increase in work load and the lack of resources to hire new staff, I
evaluate only those sites that are dubbed problematic whether it be
permit or enforcement actions.
I joined this group in the hopes of filling some voids in my experience with
saline, sodic, saline-sodic soil conditions. With the wide variations in
wastes and climates within this state, there are several facilities that
have developed problems with salt and sodium build up in the soils.
Some of these are due to high concentrations of these constituents in
the waste stream whether it be due to source water or production
activities. In other areas, problems occur due to the treatment process
of the stream flow. These problems generally occur due to high
evaporation rates and length of retention time for the effluent prior to
application.
Some of the topics I would like to see discussion on and will elaborate on
in the future are:
1. Movement of nutrients with soils strongly impacted by saline and
sodic conditions (SAR's ) 15-20).
2. Effects of salts and sodic conditions on different soil classifications.
Such as clays versus clay loams or sandy clays etc. I have noticed
great differences in the impacts upon different soils of similar
classification.
3. Development of subsurface barriers or impermeable layers due to
leaching practices.
4. Different ways and means to lower the threat of salt and sodic
problems. I receive calls periodically from individuals wanting to know
their best avenue for correcting a problem. I am usually unable to assist
because I am not a private consultant and I can not legally justify any
given procedure. Basically all I can do is approve of a method that they
may develop. Also, I am limited in knowledge pertaining to this area.

Salary: Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Scope: Hydrologic and water quality modeling.
Responsibilities: The incumbent will work with a team of scientists
involved in a
continental/regional/watershed scale hydrologic modeling project.
The job involves calibrating and validating
a basin scale hydrologic/
water quality model along with making
models assessable via the
internet/intranet user interfaces. Work
with hydrologic model user
groups to assist in use of the model in
their research.
Supervision: The incumbent will work under the project leader Dr. R.
Srinivasan
at the Blackland Research Center.
Qualifications: The incumbent must have a B.S/M.S. / Ph.D. in
agricultural, natural,
physical or environmental science. The incumbent must have a strong
background in hydrology with 1-2 years experience in GIS, good
programming capability in C, C++ and/or FORTRAN, experience in working
under a UNIX environment, knowledge of relational database management
and development, and demonstrated experience in any shell script
language like Perl, Awk or Sed. Internet application development
experience is a plus.
