I'm a Speech Therapist, working especially with communication aids for speech-impaired people at the National Center of Logopedics. This Center serves as a competence senter for speech-impaired people of all ages from the whole country. Persons with ALS is one group that seems to be more actually than before, even though they still are very few. We are using differnt types of communication-aids for these clients, such as Lightwriter and Polycom/Polytalk, both with INFOVOX, a text-to-speech- synteziser, for the Norwegian Language. Added to the communication-problems, they have swallowing -and nutrition problems. In a new team we are going to build up a "Security- Network" including information about what kind of help is are available to them. Most of the clients seem to have gotten minimal information about those things before they are coming to the Center. We are interested to participate in the discussion about the special group for ALS Tone Finne National Center of Logopedics Bredtvetveien 4 0950 Oslo Norway (2) ===== Address Request ========== From : ZINJMAN@uog.pacific.edu Subject: address request Date : Sun, 21 Mar 93 19:26:41 PST I would like to be able to reach Dr. D.P. OTC 03/23 0952 BIO-TECHNOLOGY GENERAL CORP. GETS BROAD SUPEROXIDE ... NEW YORK (MARCH 23) BUSINESS WIRE - Bio-Technology General Corp. (NASDAQ: BTGC) Tuesday announced that it has been granted U.S. Patent No. 5,196,335 which contains broad claims for the gene encoding human copper/zinc superoxide dismutase ("SOD"), recombinant expression vectors and genetically engineered cells containing the SOD gene. It is the SOD gene that was reported in a Nature article on March 4, 1993 to be linked to familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis("ALS"), a neurodegenerative disorder also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. The patent, which names Dr. Yoram Groner of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel as inventor, is assigned to Yeda Research and Development Corporation, and is licensed exclusively to Bio-Technology General. "This patent reaffirms BTG's pioneering leadership position in the area of SOD research and development. Because of this patent, competitors will be precluded from manufacturing copper/ zinc SOD in the United States, regardless of whether the product is produced in yeast, bacteria or any other host cell," stated Sim Fass, President and Chief Executive Officer of BTG. Bio-Technology General is currently conducting a clinical trial testing the efficacy of SOD in the prevention of broncho- pulmonary dysplasia in premature neonates. In connection with this study, the Company has received U.S. Letters Patent No. 5, 116,616 directed to the use of intratracheal administration of copper/zinc SOD to protect humans from lung injury due to hyperoxia and hyperventilation. The Company also holds FDA orphan drug designation for this indication. In addition to its study in premature neonates, BTG plans to shortly initiate pharmacological studies with its recombinant SOD to determine the feasibility of progressing to a clinical trial with ALS patients. Bio-Technology General Corp. is a leading biotechnology company principally engaged in the research, development and manufacture of genetically engineered products for human and animal health care.
