(5) ===== update on Synergen ========== From: Executive News Svc.( via CompuServe) RTf 06/16 1149 Synergen hopes for profits by 1996 MINNEAPOLIS, June 16, Reuter - Synergen Inc chairman and chief executive officer Larry Soll he hoped the company would show a net profit in 1995 or 1996. "That's a guess," he added. Kenneth Collins, executive vice president, finance and administration, reiterated the company's projection that its second quarter loss would be slightly higher than its first quarter loss of $0.82 a share. Losses in the third and fourth quarters, however, would be 30-35 pct less than the first-quarter loss, he added. Analysts have estimated that Synergen will have a net loss for 1993 of $2.80 a share, compared with a losses of $1.66 in 1992 and $0.36 in 1991. Meanwhile, Synergen is aggressively pursuing both new uses for its Antril drug and testing of other drugs, officials said. The company will begin tests in the third quarter of the effectiveness of Antril in seriously ill patients threatened by sepsis, Soll said. Earlier drug trials across a broader scope of patients showed only a 15 pct reduction in the mortality rate of patients taking the drug. Soll said the company is also "encouraged by the results thus far" on the use of Antril to treat patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Of the 2 million people who suffer with this condition, he added that Synergen would like to focus on the 800,000 who are severely ill. He added it's hoped that Antril not only will reduce inflammation in these cases, but preserve joint tissue as well. Soll also said the company is hoping for "meaningful results" in 1994 from Phase II/III trials for ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) for treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig's disease.
